American Sign Language (ASL) has handshapes for every letter in the English alphabet.  Here you can learn each hand sign for the letter of your choice, you can use this to spell your name.

American Sign Language Signs for Colors

This lesson is a demonstration of the different ASL signs for each color.  Each color has its own sign with some background as to why it is signed like this.  Learning signs for colors is a very basic lesson of American Sign Language.

Assignment

Now that you are done it is time to use what you have learned.  
For this assignment, use what you learned on the virtual tour to sign your name and favorite color in American Sign Language!  
You can even take a video of you signing your favorite color and name, and post it on social media; make sure to use the ASL Adventure Hashtag!

LESSON PLAN

  • Audience: Young deaf community

  • Topic: American Sign Language

  • Duration: 30 minutes

  • Materials: 

    • Access to the internet using mobile devices or computers

    • Projectors for visuals

  • Standards:

    • ALEX- Alabama Learning Exchange

      • Exchange simple information using American Sign Language. 

      • Communicate on very familiar topics using a variety of words and phrases. 

      • Fingerspelling

  • Objectives:  

    • The audience will be able to learn the basic vocabulary in American sign language by learning about the signs virtually

  • Introduction: Audience will be directed toward simple signs displayed and be able to learn them.  

  • Activities/Procedures:  

    • The home page of the virtual tour will be displayed after the introduction.

    • Lesson 1 will teach viewers about fingerspelling and how to sign each letter of the alphabet

    • Lesson 2 will display the ASL signs for colors and how to sign them

  • Main Activities Assesment

    • The assignment is next and it involves videotaping you signing your name and favorite color and submitting using a hashtag
